I love September the 19th. It’s Talk Like a Pirate Day. There are so many fun therapy activities which can be incorporated into therapy.  And let’s face it who doesn’t like to talk like a pirate and wear an eye patch for the day!

So how do you put together a Talk like a Pirate themed speech day?  Well, my first place for inspiration is often Pinterest.  I have put together a board of books, craft activities as well as free resources on Pinterest.  I have also created a resource which you can use for multiple targets.  Check it out here.

There are heaps of fun books with my favourites being Pirate Pete and 1001 Pirate Things to Spot.

Pirate Pete is great for requesting items, changing the story and talking about what makes sense and what doesn’t.  1001 Pirate Things to Spot is great for describing and spot it activities as well as following instructions.

This is also a great day for working on the tricky sound /r/.  Don’t forget the commercially available games to support your activities in the clinic.  I think all clinics have a pop up pirate or pop up pirate treasure chest. My latest favourite is from Hape and is a wooden balance game called Stormy Sea.

Too much fun for just a day, let’s make it Talk like a Pirate week.

So ‘tell it to the parrot’ and make it a great week, Me Hearties.
